What skills improve an ability?

Normally each ability is improved by 3 skills. The execptions are a few abilities which aren’t affected by skills at all (Boarding Party, Auxiliary to Battery) and Photonic Fleet, which is affected by a lot of science skills (if you are curious, you can use the ingame skill browser). Some tactical abilities are listed with 2 skills in my list aswell. The 3rd skill affecting these abilities is a special energy/projetile damage skill (e.x. phasers, photon torpedo, …).

Finding all skills which improves an ability using my list is pretty simple:

  1. Search the ability you want look up in the 1st column.
  2. Move in the same row to the right.
  3. You will find the skills affecting the choosen ability in the columns labeled “Lieutenant” – “Admiral” (the ones with straigt text).

Example: What should I train for Hazard Emitters?

  1. I search Hazard Emitters in the 1st column.
  2. I move to the right in the same row
  3. In the “Lieutenant” column I find: “Starship Operations Training”. This is the first skill improving Hazard Emitters.
  4. In the “Lieutenant Commaner” column I find: “Starship Emitters”. This is the second skill.
  5. In the “Captain” column I find: “Starship Hazard System”. This is the 3rd and final skill.

What abilities are improved by a skill?

This is how you can find all abilities which are improved by a particular skill:

  1. Search the colum, which contains the skill you want to look up.
  2. Move down the column from the top.
  3. If you hit a row with the skill you are looking, move the same row to the left. You will find one of the improved abilities in the 1st column.
  4. repeat steps 2 and 3

Example: What abilities are improved by Starship Sensors?

  1. I search for the column which contains “Starship Sensors”. It is the “Lieutenant Commander” column.
  2. I move the “Lieutenant Commander” colmun down from the top.
  3. I find “Starship Sensors” in the 1st row.
  4. I move left in the 1st row and find “Charged Particle Burst” in the 1st column. This is one of the abilities which improves “Starship Sensors”.
  5. I go back to the “Lieutenant Commander” column and start moving down again.
  6. If i find “Starship Sensors” again i move left, and so on, until I am at the end of the column.

Where can I get an ability?

There are 2 types of abilities:

1. Captain Abilities – They are specific to your own captain character and class. Bridge Officers can’t be trained with that abilities. You will unlock them automatically while leveling up your captain.

2. Bridge Officer Abilities: They can be trained by your bridge officers and are available in 3 tiers (I, II and III). The 1st and 2nd tier abilities are available at the skill trainer or by training your crew with other bridge officers. The 3rd tier is only available from rare bridge officers or by training your bridge officers with your captain. To be able to train specific abilities with your captain you need to have the appropriate skills trained (refer to the ingame skill browser and skill descriptions for more information). Furthermore you can only train inside your chosen captain class. So science captains only can train science abilities, engineering captains only engineering abilties, …

What abilities are available in which tier and where they are found, can be looked up in the list very easlily:

  1. Search the ability you want look up in the 1st column.
  2. Move to the right in the same row
  3. You will find the information for the choosen ability in the columns labeled “Lieutenant” – “Admiral” (the ones with angular text).

If you find a number instead of the tiers (I, II, III) than it is a captain ability. The number is the level when the ability is learned by your captain (after having spend enough skill points).

Otherwise you will find I, II and III. They stand for the 3 tiers in which abilities are available. The column where they are written, describes which slot of your bridge officers they fit in. If there is a “I” in the Ensign column it means that the ability is available as the 1st tier for an ensign ability slot. If there is a “III” in the Commander column it means that you need a commander bridge officer skill slot in whicht this ability can be trained.

Example: Where can I get “Extend Shields”?

  1. I search “Extend Shields” in the 1st column.
  2. I move to the right in the same row
  3. I find a “I” in the “Lieutenant” column. This means that the ability is available at the skill trainer or through training from other bridge officers. Because it is written in the “Lieutenant” column I need an engineering bridge officer with a Lieutenant ability slot.
  4. The “II” is in the “Lieutenant Commander” column. So it’s available at the skill trainer or from other bridge officers and need an enginnering Lieutenant Commander skill slot.
  5. The “III” is in the “Commander” column. Because it is a 3rd tier ability it is only available by training with your captain or from rare bridge officers.

What powerlevel affects an ability?

Some abilities are improved by higher specific powerlevels. Which abilities are affected and by what powerlevel can be looked up in the following way:

  1. Search the ability you want look up in the 1st column.
  2. Move in the same row to the right.
  3. You will find the powerlevel which affects the ability in the “Powerlevel” column.

If there is a “-“, the ability is not affected by powerlevels at all.

If there is a “A” (Auxiliary), “E” (Engines), “S” (Shield) or “W” (Weapons), the ability is affected by the specified powerlevel.

Example: What powerlevel affects “Tachyon Beam”?

  1. I search “Tachyon Beam” in the 1st column.
  2. I move to the right in the same row
  3. In the “Powerlevel” column i find: “A”. This means “Tachyon Beam” is improved by a higher auxiliary powerlevel.

What console improves an ability?

Most science abilities and one engieering ability are improved by consoles. What console can be looked up in the following way:

  1. Search the ability you want look up in the 1st column.
  2. Move in the same row to the right.
  3. You will find the console which improves the ability in the last column.

Example: What console improves “Transfer Shield Strength”?

  1. I search “Transfer Shield Strength” in the 1st column.
  2. I move to the right in the same row
  3. In the last column i find the console: “Induction Stabilizer”

What does Duration, Recharge, Cooldown and System mean? (Calculating the real Recharge/Cooldown of abilities)

Duration – simply the duration of the ability in seconds

Recharge – the basic recharge time of the ability in seconds (without global or system cooldown)

Cooldown – the global cooldown (kicks in if an ability is stacked, ex. 2x Science Team)

System – system cooldown (kicks in if there are more than 1 abilities of the same system type)

So what does this mean? Lets do a simple example with 2x Science Team

  1. Both abilities are ready to go at the start.
  2. At 5sec Science Team 1 is used.
  3. Because it’s Duration is 5sec it stays active for 5sec.
  4. The Recharge of Science Team is 30sec, so it is unusable for 30sec from the activation.
  5. Because Science Team 2 is exact the same ability it goes into Global Cooldown when Science Team 1 is used. The Cooldown of Science Team is 15sec, so Science Team 2 can’t be used for 15sec after Science Team 1 is used.

So the earliest time you could use Science Team 2 is at 20sec. This is shown here:

Because Science Team 1 already is in recharge for another 15sec the Global Cooldown won’t kick in this time (they don’t stack). As you can see you could activate Science Team 1 at 35sec again and so on… Another interesting thing you can notice: More than 2 Science Teams wouldn’t make sense because of the Global Cooldown.

If you would activate Science Team 2 at 25sec, the Global Cooldown will still kick in by 5sec like this:

So far so good. But what about System Cooldown? Another example this time with 2 different Skills: Hazard Emitters + Polarize Hull

  1. Both abilities are ready to go at the start.
  2. At 5sec Hazard Emitter is used.
  3. It’s Duration is 15sec, so it’s active 15sec
  4. The Recharge is 45sec
  5. Now the new stuff: Because Hazard Emitter and Polarize Hull are in the same system group, Polarize Hull goes into System Cooldown.

System Cooldown is always 15 seconds. What systems belongs to which system group can be looked up in the “System” column. If the two abilities have the same characters they are in the same system group and share a system cooldown. In our example: “Hazard Emitter” = “HS” (Hazard System) and “Polarize Hull” = “HS” aswell. You can find a list of the abbreviations on the skill list itself.

The Last example shows Polarize Hull activated just after it’s system cooldown wore off:

I hope this helped you a bit. If the cooldown, recharge stuff is still hard to understand for you, just transfer a character to the testserver and play around a bit.
